TOTB Working Groups
Nuclear-Free Zones
Dozens of countries around the world have declared themselves nuclear weapons-free zones. Among these are the countries of Latin America (the Treaty of Tlatelolco), 20 countries in Africa (Treaty of Pelindaba), the countries of the South Pacific (Treaty of Rarotonga), five countries in Southeast Asia (Treaty of Bangkok), five countries in Central Asia (Central Asian Nuclear Weapon Free Zone Treaty), Mongolia, and the former East Germany. These treaties reflect a wholesale rejection of nuclear armaments by mostly economically-disadvantaged nations in the Global South, which live under the nuclear shadow cast by the nine nuclear weapons states. The treaties also represent one of the untold success stories of the Nuclear Age.
This working group works to support the establishment of nuclear weapons-free zones around the world, while simultaneously publicizing and supporting the efforts of the many countries that have ratified nuclear weapons-free zone treaties already.

End Nuclear Colonialism
Each stage in the nuclear fuel chain -- uranium mining, uranium milling, uranium enrichment, fuel use, nuclear weapons production, nuclear waste storage, and nuclear weapons testing -- has taken place disproportionately on the lands of indigenous peoples, both in the US and globally. This process has had devastating consequences for these communities' past, present, and future generations, leading to spiraling cancer rates and the long-term poisoning of the lands on which they depend for their cultural well-being.
In recent years, resistance to Nuclear Colonialism has been growing steadily. This working group supports indigenous campaigns that oppose Nuclear Colonialism. Its activities include grassroots education, relationship-building with indigenous communities, and providing these communities with various resources (such as web sites and fundraisers) as needed and requested.
